VIENNA – Austria is set to enjoy several more days of mild and sunny autumn weather before a change arrives in the middle of the week. According to the latest forecast from Geosphere Austria, a ridge of high pressure will keep conditions largely stable through Tuesday, with temperatures reaching up to 22 degrees Celsius. From Wednesday onward, however, a frontal system and a Mediterranean low-pressure area are expected to bring rain to many parts of the country.

Monday will begin with widespread sunshine across much of Austria, although persistent morning fog may linger in parts of the western Danube Valley, southern regions, and inner-Alpine basins and valleys. During the afternoon, cloud cover is forecast to increase from the north, while southeastern areas will also see more clouds moving in. Morning temperatures will range from zero to 11 degrees, rising to between 11 and 22 degrees during the day.

Fog and low cloud are expected to remain a feature on Tuesday morning, particularly in inner-Alpine valleys, the northern and eastern lowlands, and the Waldviertel region. Conditions are forecast to improve gradually by midday, bringing increasing sunshine. In southwestern Austria, however, clouds will thicken during the first half of the day, with rain developing and intensifying by the evening. Temperatures will range from minus two to plus nine degrees in the morning and climb to between 12 and 20 degrees during the afternoon, with the warmest conditions expected in the foehn-affected western regions.

Weather Turning More Unsettled

A significant shift in weather patterns is forecast for Wednesday as a disturbance moving in from the southwest combines with a Mediterranean low-pressure system. Geosphere Austria noted that details of the system remain somewhat uncertain.

Current projections suggest frequent and at times heavy rainfall along the southern side of the Alps, extending towards the Koralpe mountain range, as well as across western Austria. Northern and eastern regions are also expected to see increasing cloud cover, though rainfall there is likely to be lighter and more intermittent. Temperatures are forecast to range from three to 11 degrees in the morning and between 11 and 21 degrees during the day.

The unsettled conditions are expected to continue into Thursday as the frontal system moves eastwards across Austria. Cloudy skies and light rain are forecast for many areas, with southern regions likely to be most affected. Weather conditions should gradually improve from the west during the day, allowing sunshine to return. The southeast is expected to remain cloudy and wet for the longest period. Daytime highs are forecast to reach between 11 and 16 degrees.

Sunny End to the Week Before Another Front

Friday is expected to start on a brighter note, although fog patches may persist across low-lying areas and basins. As the day progresses, another weather front approaching from the west is forecast to bring extensive cloud cover. Rain showers are expected to reach the western provinces of Vorarlberg and Tyrol by the evening.

The snow line is forecast to fall to around 1,500 metres above sea level, marking a further step towards more seasonal autumn conditions. Morning temperatures will range from zero to seven degrees, while daytime highs are expected to reach between 13 and 18 degrees.

Despite the coming midweek interruption, Austria’s “Golden October” weather pattern is set to provide residents with a final spell of pleasantly mild and sunny autumn days before wetter and cooler conditions become more widespread.
